Kasey Swails

Platform Architect & Full-Stack Engineer

kasey@webheadsolutions.com · United States · Remote-friendly · kaseyswails.com

Platform architect and full-stack engineer, 10 years shipping production software, with an unusual habit: architecting, building, and operating entire platforms solo, from data model and tenant-safe RBAC through identity, integration, real-time, cloud, and deploy. Since 2025 I have designed and operated a private AI platform on hardware I own: self-hosted model serving across a two-tier GPU lab, MongoDB-backed vector retrieval with AST-aware chunking, an MCP tool server, and a six-gate policy pipeline governing what machine-written code is allowed to touch. Four production platforms in daily use, one with paying customers on a live shop floor, across six industries entered cold. EMT-turned-engineer who came up under HIPAA, which is where I learned the rule I still design to: regulated data does not leave a defined boundary, and every access is accountable.

Core competencies

AI platform:
Self-hosted model serving (Ollama), model evaluation and benchmarking, vector retrieval with AST-aware chunking (ts-morph), MCP tool servers, Anthropic SDK, policy-gated code generation, secret redaction at the model boundary
Architecture:
Multi-tenant SaaS (database per tenant), tenant-safe RBAC, identity federation (Auth0 OIDC/M2M), integration middleware, real-time systems, build-vs-buy and total-cost-of-ownership analysis
Languages & frameworks:
TypeScript, JavaScript, React 18/19, Next.js, Node.js, Express, Python, PHP/Laravel, Java
Data & backend:
MongoDB/Mongoose, BigQuery, REST, Socket.io, Stripe Connect, QuickBooks API
Cloud & DevOps:
Google Cloud (Professional Cloud Developer, earned 2019, lapsed 2021), Cloud Storage, Docker, Vercel, Render, CI gates, Sentry/Pino observability, 800+ tests across the portfolio

Selected projects

OH SCRAP!, Multi-tenant SaaS · Manufacturing ops

In production · my product

My product, built and owned by me, with Sutcliffe Mechanical as the flagship customer using it on the shop floor every day. Six versions shipped on a continuous customer-feedback loop, with tenant isolation ready for additional orgs.

Daily shop-floor use in production · 2+ yrs running a real shop · 6 versions shipped on customer feedback · 90+ tests passing

Solved The Problem, Platform engineering · Multi-tenant SaaS

Live · spinning out verticals

A live platform at app.solvedtheproblem.com where new verticals assemble from existing primitives instead of starting from scratch. The billing rails are built on Stripe Connect, and the strongest pieces (the Rodeo vertical and the cross-tenant Governance/L10 layer) are now being extracted into their own standalone SaaS products.

5 verticals on one platform · 32 reusable platform modules · 2+ yrs live in production · Pre-revenue Stripe billing built, not yet earning

Sovereign Command Center, AI infrastructure · Full-stack platform

Operating daily · closed-source

A local-first AI coding platform whose data never leaves the developer's machine: self-hosted, multi-model LLM orchestration for proprietary codebases that can't be shipped to a cloud vendor. It's my production multiplier: how I ship whole systems solo, faster and safer than teams renting per-seat cloud AI. The intended model is a one-time, org-bound license rather than a subscription. Nothing has been sold: this is a single-operator platform I run myself, and the licensing is built, not proven.

6 safety gates on AI-written code · Local LLMs, cloud optional · 88 subsystem tests · 7 major subsystems

KAEB Sales System, Business operations platform

In production · maintained

A trusted, long-running engagement (~1.5 years of maintained production software). The schema-driven framework turns each new module into declarative config instead of bespoke code: proof of sustained reliability, not just a greenfield demo.

639 tests · zero failures · 1.5+ yrs continuous production · 6 handoff runbooks shipped

Self-hosted LLM inference versus cloud APIs: a build-versus-buy evaluation

kaseyswails.com/writing/self-hosted-llm-build-vs-buy

Criteria defined before scoring, benchmarks run on a two-tier GPU lab, a scored options table with sensitivity analysis, a total-cost-of-ownership model including the operator cost most comparisons omit, and a conditional recommendation.

Letting AI touch regulated systems

The five objections stakeholders raise to AI adoption, the specific architectural control that answers each, and how identity, integration, data, and observability interrelate.

Experience

Webhead Solutions, Software Tailor · Full-Stack Engineer

Now

Fractional and project-based software for small, growing companies. A trusted ~1.5-year KAEB engagement anchors the work, alongside my own products: OH SCRAP, Solved The Problem, and Sovereign Command Center.

NexGen Solutions (Autodesk Gold Partner), Operations Manager / Dev Lead

Remote

Led development and operations: Autodesk Fusion 360 plugins, reporting data flows, and Salesforce admin/development. More GCP, more enterprise integration.

Winamac Coil & Spring, Software Developer

Indiana

A spring factory. Built shop-floor QA/QC tools and internal quoting systems: the manufacturing-ops DNA that later became OH SCRAP.

Colling Media, Developer

Arizona

A digital + traditional marketing agency. Built and maintained LeadFlow, stood up BigQuery datasets, and shipped recruiting software and tools for Knight-Swift Transportation. Worked daily in GCP; earned the Google Cloud Professional Cloud Developer certification in 2019.

Independent / agency work, Application Developer

Remote

Laravel 5.x business tools: quoting engines, technician management, logistics systems, and financial / wealth tools like asset allocators and more.

NewTek, Web Developer

Arizona

Built and maintained WordPress sites, then realized web apps paid better and solved harder problems, and went looking for them.

Emergency Department, EMT → self-taught developer

Phoenix, AZ

Running CPR, I watched nurses keep time on a paper towel. I went home, taught myself Java, and built an Android documentation app: CPR timer, med timer, IV access, airway. That was the start.

Certifications

Google Cloud: Professional Cloud Developer, earned 2019. Google Cloud certifications run two years, so this one lapsed in 2021. Listed as earned, not current.

Education

Glendale Community College: Web development coursework (2012–2016)

Building something durable? I occasionally join the right team as a founding engineer. Say hello.
